As many new infectious diseases emerge continuously, people seem to have less concern than before over the intestinal parasitic disease, which did have a generally descending trend. However, a longitudinal observation of the intestinal parasitic disease over the past 20 years conducted on an out-patient-department basis in Shangdong province showed that in recent years, the incidence of human parasitic disease in Chinese remains at a high level. The intestinal protozoan infections especially have an ascending tendency. There is a remarkable difference of the infectious rate of intestinal parasitic diseases in different seasons of the year. The highest rate is seen in the third quarter, while the lowest in the first. Observation of the seasonal distribution of intestinal parasitic infection showed that despite the fairly apparent changes of the intestinal parasitic infections in China in the past 20 years, the seasonal difference is still quite evident. A comparative study of the rate of infection in 1981, 1990 and 2000 showed that the cases of all intestinal parasitic diseases occurred mostly in the third quarter of the year, which were respectively 49/49 %, 25.34 % and 15.54 %. The lowest figures were seen in the first quarter, respectively of 39.47 %, 15.88 % and 7.20 %.

Related medical personnel appealed that the prevention and treatment of intestinal parasitic disease should not be neglected, and suggested the seasonal emphasis especially for the prevention and treatment of the most important parasites, striving for the carrying down the infection rate to the lowest level., http://www.100md.com
